Multi-system operators (MSOs) like UCN, BCN and GTPL are expected to finalize the package for set top boxes next week. Most of the channels have finalized their rates and the remaining ones will do it on Monday.

Jagdish Paliya, director of UCN, told TOI that if a consumer goes in for only free channels then he would have to pay only Rs100 a month. "Our rates will be more or less similar to those in Mumbai as the Hindi and English channels charge the same rate all over the country. Rates of regional channels vary from state to state."

In Mumbai, the basic package has popular channels plus the Marathi ones and costs Rs180. The add-on package having channels in regional languages other than Marathi like Telugu costs Rs225. However, in Andhra Pradesh the basic package will have Telugu channels and Marathi ones will be included in the add-on package. If you want to watch more channels you will have to pay more depending on their rate. In all the packages you will have to pay monthly entertainment duty (ED) of Rs45 plus 12.5% service tax.

Paliya said popular channels like Sony, Zee and sports were the costliest. "Sony offers a bouquet deal that includes channels like Discovery. Channels like HBO are not included in any bouquet."
