Following in the footsteps of Navi Mumbai, Pune and Nasik, the Shiv Sena-ruled Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will vote against the Centre’s much-hyped smart city project for the metropolis.
Mumbai’s former mayor and Sena MLA Sunil Prabhu clarified his party’s stand, claiming the project will not only end the autonomy of the civic body, but it may also lead to Mumbai getting carved out of Maharashtra, with the appointment of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to execute the project.
“The SPV will be another form of a private company which will control the development of Mumbai. This is a ploy to make Mumbai a union territory. This is nothing, but an attempt to set up a parallel government,” said an editorial in Sena mouthpiece Saamna on Monday. The BMC is meeting on December 15 to decide whether it agrees on the project. The Sena, despite being part of the Centre and the State government has vowed to oppose it.
