This mixture was once again evident when the Andhra Pradesh police issued notice to T News, a channel partially owned by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s family. The allegation: Airing an audio tape of a telephone conversation between Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and nominated MLA Elvys Stephenson that apparently contained defamatory material. The notice, served by the Assistant Commissioner of Police of Visakhapatnam, asked the channel to reply within three days as to why legal action should not be taken against it for airing defamatory content that ‘violated public decency’ and ‘disturbed tranquility and maintenance of law and order’. It violated Section 5 and Rule 6 of Cable TV News Network Act. T News aired the tapes on 7 June at around 8.30 pm.
