Australia captain Steve Smith has been ruled out of Australia tour of New Zealand with an ankle injury.

Smith today confirmed he won’t join the ODI squad for the three-match Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, which gets underway on January 30.

The National Selection Panel will have a phone hook-up later today to decide on Smith’s replacement for the NZ tour, with vice-captain David Warner being rested from the trans-Tasman series.

Smith said he strained medial ligaments in his left ankle during Thursday's ODI win over Pakistan in Adelaide but isn’t expected to be in doubt for next month’s four-Test tour of India.

He's been told by medical staff he can resume training in seven to 10 days.

It was originally planned that Smith would join Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc and Matthew Wade in heading to a Dubai training camp to prepare for the India tour after the Chappell-Hadlee series.

Eight players not involved with the ODI squad (Usman Khawaja, Matt Renshaw, Ashton Agar, Steve O'Keefe, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Swepson, Mitchell Marsh and Jackson Bird) were scheduled to fly to Dubai on Monday.
