NHK to broadcast in 8K UHDTV for 2016 Olympics

Japanese public broadcasting company, Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK), has announced details of its plan to pilot satellite broadcasting in Super Hi-Vision (8K ultra-high definition TV) in for the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. NHK says it will broadcast documentaries and special events in the 8K format (which increases picture resolution to 7680 x 4320 pixels) from 2016, and subsequently plans to offer complete 8KTV broadcasting by 2020 when Tokyo will host the Olympics.

NHK conducted a successful broadcasting experiment with 8K format from its headquarters in Hitoyoshi to a receiving station which is 27 km away. In May 2012, NHK’s sent the world’s first successful terrestrial signal in 8K to a point 4.2 km away.

Reiterating its commitment to ultra-high definition digital video format space, the company also announced that it will install a 350” cinema-style screen at the upcoming NAB broadcasting technology show in Las Vegas, April 7-10, and will showcase the latest 8K cameras, including its 8K ‘Cube’ camera weighing around two kilograms.
