Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar took a jibe at Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Kanhaiya Kumar for opposing liquor ban at national level saying he does not have knowledge about the issue. He said right to drink is not a fundamental right.

"The Constitution of India, in its directive principles of state policy, has categorically favoured prohibition. As per the directive principles of state policy (Article 47) it is duty of the State to endeavour to bring about prohibition of the consumption of intoxicating drinks and of drugs which are injurious to health," Nitish said on Monday while responding to a query after his weekly 'Janta Ke Durbar Mein CM' programme in Patna.

"I inquired from Kanhaiya and explained to him the constitutional provision regarding prohibition. Sometimes people issue such statements because of lack of knowledge about the subject," he added.

Kanhaiya, who is on a two-day visit to his home state Bihar, had met Nitish and RJD chief Lalu Prasad on Saturday. Speaking to reporters later, Kanhaiya had supported Bihar government's decision to ban liquor in the state, but said prohibiting it as the national level would be against the democratic rights guaranteed to people by the Constitution of India. "One's principled position in view of our Constitution rights would be that those wishing to drink should be allowed to drink. That's why I say nationwide prohibition will violate people's freedom of choice," Kanhaiya had said.
