Even as the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) have taken divergent views on granting security clearance to Sun TV Network channels, a top government official has said that a final decision on the matter will be taken ‘collectively’. “There may be a difference of approach, which is all right in a democracy, but the final decision on the matter would be taken collectively,” a top government official told PTI. “There are various sides to this issue, including those related to right to freedom of expression. It is natural that with their mandates, different ministries may take a different view. But a final decision can only be taken collectively,” the official emphasised. Earlier, the MHA had denied security clearance to Sun TV channels due to pending criminal investigations against the Marans. It has also appealed against the Madras High Court single-judge bench’s decision to grant relief to Kalanithi Maran’s Kal Cables.

Kalanithi Maran-promoted Sun TV Network has moved the Supreme Court against the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) decision to attach its assets worth Rs 742.58 crore (Rs 7.43 billion). A bench headed by chief justice H.L. Dattu said that they would pass appropriate orders when the case comes up for consideration, according to a report in Mint. Sun TV has contended that the case does not fall within the ambit of the 2G spectrum scam case. Earlier, the Madras High Court had dismissed petitions filed by Sun TV and Kal Communications challenging the attachment of their properties by the ED in the Aircel-Maxis case.
