Indian flag hoisted at Olympic Village

At an elegant and colourful ceremony Sunday, the Indian contingent was formally welcomed and ushered into the London Olympics’ Games Village here.

Games Village Mayor Charles Allan welcomed the Indian deputy Chef de Mission P.K.M. Raja, athletes and officials at the plush apartment as the tricolour was hoisted while the national anthem was played.

Raja exchanged mementos with Allan and then signed on the peace statue pledging India’s support for spreading the gospel of peace and the Olympic movement.

The Indian athletes and the officials were overwhelmed with the warmth and positive energy emanated by the troupe belonging to the National Youth theatre, enthralling the audience with their superlative acrobatics.

Tennis stars Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Boppana, world number one archer Deepika Kumari along with her two team mates and members of the hockey team were part of the function.

The Indian contingent has been housed in Titan House at the Seaside block.
Later Raja said that all the Indian sports persons who have moved into the village are fit and excited about the mega event beginning July 27.

He disclosed that at the daily meetings chaired by him, the coaches and managers have given positive feedback about their teams.

The athletes are supported by a medical team of four doctors – Sarla Rao (head of the team, Sanjogita Soodan, B. B. Nayak and Abhishek Choudhary, three physiotherapists: Ramesh Trivedi, HariShankar Varma and Srikant Iyengar.

Raja said that Sarla has informed him that she is going to get masseurs for athletes on permanent basis.

Mittal father-son duo to carry Olympics Torch

Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, who is the main sponsor of the giant AreclorMittal Orbit near the Olympics Stadium, will be among the individuals who will carry the Olympics Torch a day before the Games begin.


The Torch will be carried by various individuals from Camden to Westminster on Thursday. Mittal's son, Aditya, 36, will also carry the Torch during the day.

The Mittal Champions Trust has been supporting Indian athletes.

Mittal, 62, said: "When I think about parallels between myself and an Olympian, I believe that success in the world of business is underpinned by very similar principles of perseverance and hard work.

Doordarshan to live telecast London Olympics opening and closing ceremonies

Public Broadcaster Doordarshan will telecast live the opening and closing ceremony of the London Olympics on its national channel while DD Sports would provide round the clock live coverage of the sporting events.

The coverage would begin from July 27 to August 13, an official release from Doordarshan said.

The Public Broadcaster would also air special programmes capturing significant moments and performance of Indian athletes.
"The opening and closing ceremony will be telecast live on DD National and DD sports. The opening Ceremony will be telecast on 28th July from 1 am to 4.30 am," the statement said.

YouTube bus for London 2012 Olympic Games

With just two days until the London 2012 Olympic Games, YouTube India today launched a unique initiative called “It’s Time You Cheer” inviting all Indians to cheer for the Indian Olympic squad and popularise the Indian athletes within the country.

As part of its drive to encourage youth to step up and support the Indian athletes, YouTube launched a special theme song composed by the noted music composer Shantanu Moitra and lyricist Swanand Kirkere titled “Aap Agar Saath Hain. Tou Jeet Bhi Saath Hai”. And to popularise Olympic Games viewership and gather more support for the athletes from their hometowns, YouTube also flagged off the YouTube Bus for Olympics, which will travel across nine key cities including hometowns of the athletes from Punjab and Haryana. The bus will offer an opportunity to watch Olympic Games live on YouTube on the bus and learn more about the history of Indian athletes at the Olympics.
