Tightening the noose around pedophiles, the government plans to create an online database with names and pictures of child sex offenders. The "registry for child molesters'' is expected to help people especially schools and orphanages to check antecedents of employees.

The proposal has been mooted by the union women and child development minister Maneka Gandhi. "We plan to create an all India registry for child molesters that will name and shame them,'' a source said. The ministry will work with the ministry of home affairs on the issue.

Countries like United Kingdom, United States and Australia are among those who maintain such registries to ensure families are safe from pedophiles. Research by NGOs working on child abuse cases say that most offenders prey on vulnerable children and look for employment or reason to be around them. Schools, orphanages, children's homes or activity centers where children are supposed to be the safest become "hunting grounds.''
