Mobile manufacturing brand OPPO was named as the new sponsor of the Indian cricket team. The BCCI has signed a five-year contract with OPPO which begins from April.

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is pleased to announce OPPO Mobiles India Private Limited as the new team sponsor for the Indian Cricket Team,” the BCCI said in a statement on Tuesday as the Indian team was involved in an intense battle against Australia in the second Test in Bangalore .

The mobile manufacturers will replace STAR India whose contract will run out on March 31. The OPPO deal is likely to have gone beyond R538 crore, the amount which STAR India had paid BCCI for its deal.

Oppo named Team India sponsor
Oppo, the electronics product manufacturing company, has been named sponsor of the India cricket team, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Tuesday (March 7).

Oppo will replace Star TV, who had announced earlier that they won't be bidding for the jersey rights. "We have been very proud that our name is carried on the jersey of Team India. But given all the uncertainties, we have decided not to bid for it again," Uday Shankar, the Star India chairman and CEO, had said earlier.

Oppo's association with the team will start from next month and will last for five years.

This is not Oppo's first foray into Indian cricket. They were the title sponsors of the Champions League T20 in 2014 and were one of the associate sponsors during the 2016 edition of the Indian Premier League.

Mobile manufacturer OPPO India Pvt Ltd has been awarded the Indian cricket team's sponsorship rights for five years, starting April. The decision was announced on Tuesday after the bid documents of all the aspirants were opened at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters.

The BCCI had set a base price of Rs. 2.2 crore a game for all the bilateral games and Rs. 70 lakh for every ICC tournament match India would feature in till March 2022. The base price was 15% higher than Rs 1.92 crore (Rs. 61 lakh for ICC games) that were being paid by Star India Pvt. Ltd.

The amount of the winning bid is still unclear. However, according to a BCCI insider, the amount is "an all time high".

The highest BCCI had received previously for team sponsorship was Rs. 3.34 crore, paid by Sahara India Pariwar.

The mobile manufacturer’s association with the BCCI will start from April 2017 for a period of five years.

Oppo has emerged as the winner while many corporates like Reliance JIo, DBS Bank and VIVO were in the race for the Team India sponsorship deal.

Incidentally, OPPO is also having global partnership deal with The International Cricket Council (ICC) for a period of four-years which runs from 2016 until 2020.

Launched in China in 2004, OPPO has already established itself as one of the world’s leading electronic and technology service providers

The development came after Star India, which is the current jersey sponsor of the senior men’s and women’s cricket teams, as well as the U-19 one, has decided against bidding for the apparel sponsorship again citing ‘lack of clarity’ on the game’s future as the reason behind its decision. Even though it kick started the Nayi Soch campaign with Indian Team Players in its innovative campaign.
