Calf injury to sideline Finch for 50-over tour match, but opener in no doubt for Sunday's series opener

Opener Aaron Finch will sit out Australia's one-day tour game in Chennai on Tuesday as he continues to manage a calf injury.

The right-hander is not in any doubt for the ODI series opener against India on Sunday, but the Aussies have taken a conservative approach by resting him for the match against a Board President's XI at Chepauk Stadium, their only warm-up game of the tour.

Australia have called up Peter Handscomb for the upcoming five-match ODI series in India , starting in Chennai on Sunday (September 17), as a cover for opener Aaron Finch .
Already struggling with a calf issue, Finch further aggravated the injury during the team's practice session on Thursday (September 14) and is set to be rested for 'first few matches' of the series. Finch first suffered the injury six weeks ago, while playing for Surrey in England. With the relapse, the Australian management feared the worst but the initial scans haven't revealed any serious damage that could possibly see Finch being ruled out of the entire tour. Consequently, he will remain with the touring party in India.
"Aaron re-aggravated his pre-existing calf injury during warm-up at training yesterday," said team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris. "He has had a scan in Chennai and although we believe it is not a serious recurrence, he will not be available for the first few one-day matches here in India. He will remain with the squad whilst we assess the injury and establish his return to play timelines."
Handscomb, who was a part of Australia's drawn Test series in Bangladesh , had recently returned to Melbourne only to fly out again on Saturday. He will be available for selection in Sunday's series opener.
Owing to the injury, Finch wasn't a part of the Australian side that played the warm-up tie in Chennai on September 12, against Board President's XI. Uncapped all-rounder Hilton Cartwright opened in Finch's absence but was dismissed for a second-ball duck in Australia's 103-run win. Travis Head is another option that the tourists might be tempted to explore given his experience at the highest level.
