NEW DELHI: A trial court on Saturday convicted Bollywood filmmaker Mahmood Farooqui of charges of raping an American woman at his south Delhi residence last year. Additional sessions judge Sanjiv Jain convicted Farooqui, best known as the co-producer of Bollywood film 'Peepli Live', for the offence under section 376 (rape). Farooqui also specializes in the art of Urdu story telling known as Dastangoi.
Farooqui, who was currently on bail, was taken into custody soon after the court pronounced him guilty. The court has now fixed August 2 for hearing arguments on quantum of sentence in the case.and Farooqui was charged by the court for the offence under section 376 (rape).
The incident relates to the March 28 rape of a 35-year-old woman, student of Columbia University, who was in the city for research work for her doctoral thesis. During her deposition as a prosecution witness in the court, the American woman stood by her complaint and alleged that Farooqui had raped her and later apologised through several e-mails exchanged between them.
