Obama Decides Not to Meet With Foreign Leader Who Called Him the Son of a Whore

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is a bit of a piece of work; earlier this summer heencouraged his country's citizens to carry out vigilante murders of drug dealers. And in speaking about a scheduled meeting with President Obama at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit currently being held in Laos, Duterte got so worked up about the mere possibility that Obama might criticize him for the vigilante thing that he called the president of the United States the "son of a whore." From AFP:

"You must be respectful. Do not just throw away questions and statements. Son of a whore, I will curse you in that forum," Duterte told a news conference shortly before flying to Laos to attend a summit.
"We will be wallowing in the mud like pigs if you do that to me."
Subsequently:

Mr. Obama had planned to meet Mr. Duterte in Laos, but the White House said early Tuesday that the meeting had been canceled.
Seems fair! Incidentally, Duterte also referred to Pope Francis as the son of a whorein 2015 after a papal visit to Manila created large traffic jams. Whore traffic jams.

Philippine President Expresses 'Regret' For Cursing Obama
Recently inaugurated Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is "expressing regret" for his comments at a fiery press conference, in which he called President Obama a "son of a bitch" or "son of a whore" (depending on how you translate the Tagalog) and threatened to swear at him in a planned bilateral meeting.

The White House canceled the meeting shortly after Duterte's comments.

"We ... regret [the remarks] came across as a personal attack on the U.S. president," Duterte's office said in a statement issued Tuesday.

The U.S. has been critical of Duterte's human rights record in his scant two months as president. At issue are the estimated 2,400 killings committed by police and vigilantes since Duterte was inaugurated June 30, according to National Police figures. He ran on a pledgeto rid the Philippines of drug trafficking, and once he took office began a campaign in which thousands of people were rounded up and killed without due process. Some of the victims were tangentially related to the drug trade — or just at the wrong place at the wrong time — including a 5-year-old killed in the roundups.
