Left-arm pacer Irfan Pathan was elated to break into the Indian team for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka after Vinay Kumar was ruled out due to injury today.
The Baroda all-rounder, who wasn't picked initially, now wants to make full use of the opportunity. "I am very happy with my selection in the team and I want to make good use of this opportunity but it's very unfortunate for Vinay Kumar," he said here on sidelines of launch of T20 World Cup trophy.
Yesterday, medium pacer R Vinay Kumar suffered a Grade I right hamstring injury during practice.
Irfan had a decent outing at the Asia cup, where he claimed five wickets in three matches. Speaking about his bowling performance, Irfan said, "In terms of bowling, I have been doing a decent job. On my comeback, I have played eight matches and took 13 wickets. It is not only about wickets but also about overall performance, and I am happy with way I have bowled." Irfan seemed excited about the Twenty20 World Cup to be held in Sri Lanka from September 18 to October 7. He felt that the Lankan tour would help the players prepare for the big tournament ahead. "Playing now in Sri Lanka will be an advantage because the T20 Cup will also be played there; so we will get a chance to get used to the conditions as the gap between the two tournament will hardly be of a month," Irfan said. He rated the West Indies as one of the dangerous teams in the T20 World Cup. "West Indies will be the team to look out for as they are a pretty dangerous side in this format. Chris Gayle is an unpredictable batsman." UNI
