Ragging claimed one more young life. This time, the victim was a second-year B.Tech student of Sathyabhama University in Chennai. Nineteen-year-old Venkata Krishna Chaitanya hanged himself to death in his house at Nizampet here on Thursday night.

Nearly eight pages in a diary, purportedly written by Chaitanya, suggested that ragging and harassment by Shekhar, a third-year student of the same college, drove him to suicide, KPHB Colony Inspector V. Sreekanth Goud said on Friday.

The youngest son of businessman Lal Babu, the victim was staying in the university’s hostel during his first year.

In second year, he moved to a rented room outside the university, along with three other students, including Shekhar. He didn’t go back to Chennai even after the festival, citing various reasons.

“We realise he had come to Hyderabad having decided to end his life and never wanted to return to college,” Mr Babu said over the phone. He was with his father and mother in their shop at Punjagutta on Thursday evening. Around 7.30 p.m., he started for home on his bike while his parents went in a car later. Chaitanya went to his bedroom and hanged himself from the ceiling fan.
