The technology will enable Jio to provide linear TV with personal video recording (PVR), video-on-demand (VOD), catch-up TV services and network PVR content, alongside access to over-the-top (OTT) video services.

“TiVo’s deal with RJMPL further demonstrates our product innovations to offer hybrid television and content discovery solutions in markets like India where rapid digitisation is occurring,” said Michael Hawkey, senior vice president and general manager of user experience, TiVo. “TiVo will help deliver new set of features and functionalities for companies like RJMPL that will give consumers access to a whole breadth of new experiences.”

The move marks the introduction of CubiTV hybrid television technology to India, although the solution is already in use across Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

Jio, led by billionaire businessman Mukesh Ambani (pictured), plans to offer its television service for free for the first six months, according to a Gizbot report. After that, the new service will reportedly be priced from INR185 per month.

Jio TV will reportedly deliver more than 360 channels, at least 50 of which will be in HD, as well as catch-up services. Different content packs will be offered, such as a sports combo or a South Indian TV combo.

Jio has shaken up India’s mobile communications sector since launching its 4G LTE service in September, with a free offer for voice services, zero roaming charges and low data rates geared at offering mobile video.
