Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, the telecom unit of Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), is setting up 14 data centres across India to create a cloud-computing infrastructure that can take advantage of, and complement, its long-delayed roll-out of fourth generation, or 4G, telecom services, finally expected this year.

The cloud-based services, three company executives familiar with the plan said, will span healthcare, education and entertainment, and build synergies with the home shopping and content businesses of Network18 Media & Investments Ltd, in which RIL is acquiring a majority stake.

These data centres will enable the company to offer its planned services like “direct-to-home (DTH) television with a bouquet of almost 2,000 channels to choose from, video-on-demand, mailing and messaging services and voice over Internet telephony (VoIP)”, the executive cited in the first instance said.

My assumption is "here DTH service might refer to IPTV"
IPTV services can be possible and it doesnt have bandwidth limit unlike satellite.

we can discuss channel count later ...as setting up 2-3 data centers itslef is big deal...It takes time and huge investment...!!

since already they are in the Remote infrastructure services, it will be easy to build them data centers..!!! It requires bunch of physical hosts and storage/SANs.
Now coming on Cloud computing, since they are not master or service provider in the CLoud services Public, they will have to build Private cloud in association of some other Cloud service provider...!!

so 4-5 years from now to see 14 datacetner count in kitty and that too Cloud...!!

Definitely it will be IPTV based services, Internet based and people then can afford PAY per usage services-channels as per their requirement..

But question is how they will put these DTH services open based on Cloud ,that's question...Because current dths are also making use of VM's (i think remotely) at backend-windows or Linux...!!!!

I feel than the writer of this article is unclear guy. Or else reliance is going to provide channels from all over the world.

Also all these Datacenter will not be meant only for dth. Dth is only a part of its data services.
