AT&T Galaxy S III also receiving OTA update that removes on-device search

After the Sprint version of the Galaxy S III receive an over-the-air update that (among other things) removed the ability to search on-device, we imagined that it would only be a matter of time before other carriers follow suit. AT&T is the first to drop the OTA bomb, which Android Central reports includes a radio update along with the aforementioned change. We've reached out to Samsung for comment on the updates, whether they're related to the ongoing Apple v. Samsung lawsuit, and whether and when we can expect them to arrive on other carriers.

In the meantime, AT&T Galaxy S III owners will be dealing with a less-functional search bar after the update. Unless, of course, they're geeky enough to download the old app file for the Google Quick Search Box and install it after the update.

Samsung cancels the 64GB I9300 Galaxy S III?

gsmarena_001.jpg

A reader of ours contacted us, saying that his order couldn't be processed as Samsung "has decided not to release the unit". However, the 16GB model remains available in pebble blue and white.

Looks like Samsung has decided that the 64GB model of the S III hasn't generated enough user interest and manufacturing it won't be worth it. That's not surprising, considering the device's microSD card slot, which allows for far cheaper memory expansion.

Galaxy S III sales breach 10 million, satisfy Samsung executives

Wondering if Samsung's new flagship has hit its sales goal yet? Breathe out -- it did. According to Yonhap, Shin Jong-kyun, head of Samsung's information technology and mobile communication division, told reporters the firm has moved more than 10 million Samsung Galaxy S IIIs since its unveiling. Jong-kyun wasn't able to give specific numbers, but we know from history that the handset is outpacing its predecessor, which took five months to make eight digits in sales. As for the goal, Sammy previously pegged the 10 millionth unit for early July, noting that it was fighting component shortages along the way -- all in all, mid-month isn't too far off. Thinking of helping the firm bolster its numbers further? We've got a whole series of reviews you may want to take a look at.

Samsung kills local search on international Galaxy S3 in 'stability' update

There's a new over-the-air update rolling out for the international Samsung Galaxy S III (aka Galaxy S3 GT-i9300) this evening. The OTA message identifies it as a "stability update," but what it also does is remove local (on-device) search functionality in the phone's built-in Google Search app. The new version -- XXBLG6 -- is a relatively recent build, having been cooked just a few days ago on Jul. 20. A new baseband version, XXLG6, is also included, but we haven't noticed any other changes thus far.

Following legal action by Apple, which temporarily resulted in the Galaxy Nexus being banned in the U.S., Samsung has taken to pre-emptively disabling the ability to search within on-device data (like contacts and applications) on some U.S. Galaxy S3's. However, the decision to kill local search on the unlocked international model -- which isn't sold in the U.S. -- is a little perplexing, not least because Apple has yet to challenge Sammy over local search in the EU or UK, where the GT-i9300 is sold.

After removing local search facility from its Galaxy SIII devices, Samsung now has said that the move was meant for the US region only and that the local search facility will be available in the international version of the smartphone.

"The most recent software upgrade for the Galaxy SIII in the UK included the inadvertent removal of the universal search function. Samsung will provide the correct software upgrade within the next few days," Samsung clarified while talking to Tech Radar UK .

Galaxy S III, Note and Note 10.1 to taste Jelly Bean very soon

Samsung shared some info on the upcoming Jelly Bean updates for the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note smartphones and the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. The trio is currently running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

gsmarena_001.jpg

Yesterday, at its pre-IFA press conference Samsung announced that the Jelly Bean updates for them are coming "very soon". We previously heard that the Galaxy S III Jelly Bean update will be released at the IFA, but either those rumors were inaccurate or the development is not going exactly as planned.
Judging by all those leaked ROMs, however, the delay won't be too long and Galaxy S III owners should be tasting Jelly Bean in a few weeks time.
As for the other two - we really hope that this "very soon" means September or October at the latest, rather than the latter parts of Q4.
