Because every company has its own way of using satellite and encoding. If a Dish TV SD user with MPEG2 STB migrates to d2h. What would he get ?
Yes ur point is right but once that person change to mpeg 4 stb than he can easily swith to other.

Question will again arise is DTH allow their smart card on other DTH s STBs.

I think dishtv s Freedom Card ( CCcam ) was the best example as they started the service like this but it goes to vain.

This is wonderful. Again something I've been advocating quite vocally. Actually, STBs should be openly available in the market. And operators should provide smart cards just like mobile SIMs.

Customer would then be able to decide what type of box he wants, what manufacturer he chooses, much like mobiles.

However, the STBs would then need to be able to support DVB-S, DVB-T and DVB-C technology for ideal usage. Also, manufacturers might include web access and web based content included. Something like Android/Apple TV.

Just imagine if we get something like that.

Not that it is not possible. But if this has to come into force , we need standard STBs available in open market which should support every possible technology available, like DVB-S, DVB-S2 etc and different encryptions. So when you insert a card with DVB-S2 and irdeto encryption it will work with it .Likewise it will work with any other provider with some other encryption. So thus clearly means the existing users won't be able to use this option unless they exchange their stb to this sort of an stb...And now considering millions of viewers with six major DTHs, can anyone tell me how much feasible this would be?

It cannot be compared to mobile portability where all operators follow a single technlogy i.e GSM. So whichever operator you choose you will get the the same set of services with different quality. While it is not the case with DTHS.

We have mobiles working on different technologies. You get GSM+CDMA dual sim mobiles. Plus within GSM also, you have 2G+2G+4G compatible mobiles which work with as many as a dozen or more frequencies.

So, a STB can surely include a lot more such stuff. Its not really difficult.

FTA receivers which we use to say they're usually caught the signals of all DTH they're smart enough to work according to DTH.

Few o_O

Millions of people ported their number when it was first launched infact I ported my numbers 6 - 7 times, 2 time even canceled though now non of the operator benefiting hence no use of portability.

Infact even DTH portability comes it will remain fluke only because standard made by DTH companies which follows each other.
