Incorporated in 1973 as a private limited company under the name Hi-Beam Electronics Pvt Ltd, Solidaire India acquired its present name in Sep.'88. It is promoted by A.N. Srinivasa Rao. It manufactures and assembles TVs, both colour and black and white. The company commenced manufacture and marketing of black & white TVs in a small way in 1973, when it took up major manufacturing operations of TVs from 1978 onwards under the Solidaire brand name. It then commenced production of colour TVs by adapting German technology from the ITT Group. Solidaire was the first to introduce TVs with built-in voltage stabilizer, stereo-cum-TV with 60 watt music power, twin antenna concept and cable TV. In 1988-89, the company expanded its capacity for the manufacture of TVs from 1 lac to 1.6 lacs pa(which was later on increased to 4 lacs pa) and 40 lacs sub-assembles. It also implemented a project to manufacture 1.5 lacs pa of electronic tuner as a part of its indegenisation programme. The company had also set up separate divisions for marketing non/stereo audio recorders and video cassette players/recorders. The Company formed a joint venture, Grundig Electronics India Pvt Ltd, with Grundig International Marketing and Sales, Germany, to procure raw materials required for manufacture of CTVs and market CTVs assembled by Solidaire.
