STAR India readies for the launch of new English GEC

STAR India is launching a new English general entertainment channel (GEC) on September 24, called STAR World Premiere HD.

The channel aims to fulfil the demand of the global English entertainment viewer by bringing the content within 24 hours of its airing in the US. The channel is launching an array of new shows and will also bring the latest seasons of the earlier shows. It will air about three hours of original content every day.

While shows like 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D', 'The Blacklist', 'Betrayal', 'Dads', 'The Goldbergs', 'The Michael J. Fox Show', 'Mom' and 'Sleepy Hollow' will run on television for the first time, Indian audiences will get to see the latest seasons of shows such as 'The Simpsons' (S25), 'New Girl' (S3), 'Revolution' (S2) , 'Two & A Half Men' (S11), 'White Collar' (S5), 'Sons of Anarchy' (S6), 'Revenge' (S3), 'Person of Interest' (S3), 'New Girl' (S3), 'The Neighbors' (S2), 'Last Man Standing' (S3), 'Modern Family' (S5), 'Homeland' (S3), 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' (S9), 'Castle' (S6) and 'Criminal Minds (S9).

Broadcasters bet big on niche channels, HD content: Star COO

With ongoing digitisation, television broadcasters are betting big on new channel launches aimed at niche audiences. Also, with the 12-minute cap on advertisements kicking in, industry stakeholders are looking for ways to make up for the reduced ad inventory.

Most broadcasters are yet to see an increase in subscription revenues, except for hi-definition (HD) channels.

Speaking on the sidelines of the recently concluded CII Big Pictures Summit, Sanjay Gupta, Chief Operating Officer, Star India, said, “We already have one and half million HD subscribers in the country. I think we are seeing a serious change in subscription revenues on HD. People are willing to pay for HD content,” he said.

Star India is set to launch its new channel Star World Premiere HD on September 24. Targeted at the youth, the channel will deliver fresh content in HD quality within a few hours of it premiering in the US. But Gupta did not specify how the channel would be priced, adding that it was being worked out in partnership with the DTH and cable platforms.

Gupta said, “With digitisation kicking in, people can access more channels, but the content being offered is still not differentiated. So, players are trying to offer differentiated content, as they look at addressing niche segments, and that’s the unlocking of digitisation as it sets in.”

AD-TIME CAP

As TV channels gear up for the shift to the 12-minute ad cap by October, Gupta believes it is good for consumers and will increase engagement levels. “In the short term, the industry will go through the pain of losing some revenue, but viewers will spend more time, will be willing to pay more, even advertisers will pay more,” he said.

Asked if advertisers were willing to pay a premium for TV ads after channels are in the process of hiking rates, Gupta said, “The cost of putting an ad and reaching out to a consumer per 10 seconds for every exposure is very low. We need to relook our ad pricing.”

STAR World Premier, the new HD channel to be launched by STAR India, will offer American TV series to the English viewing segment in India, such that all the shows on the channel will be telecast within 12-24 hours of their launch in America. Launching with 26 shows, the channel hence goes into a weekly show mode as the American television habit. The network already has STAR World, its English GEC, which is available in HD version too.

This will be the 11th channel in the English GEC space along with Australia Network, Big CBS Prime, STAR World, STAR World HD, FX, Zee Cafe, AXN, Fox Crime, Big CBS Love and Comedy Central.

Four studios will contribute to the content of STAR World Premier, including Fox Studios, Sony Pictures, Warner Brothers and Disney. The channel could have to shift the telecast of the shows by a day, vis-a-vis their American launches. Kevin Vaz, business head, STAR English channels boasts of entertaining about two thirds of the total English viewers in the country through six channels (excluding STAR World Premier HD). It is expected that all the HD audience will sample the new channel.

Despite being a paid channel, advertising will also be a stream of revenue for STAR World Premier. With this, the network is targeting about one and a half million households which have HD set-top boxes.

The channel is being promoted on STAR India's HD channels, along with a strong digital campaign. It will be available on all platforms that carry STAR channels.
