"Definitely, it (DMDK decision) is not a setback for us," he told reporters. Stating that his party chief M Karunanidhi had extended an invite to the DMDK several times as it would be good (to take on the AIADMK), however, it is their right to accept or decline the invite, said Stalin.

"It is their (DMDK's) right (to decide). We cannot and will not like to interfere in their right," he said.

Ending the suspense, DMDK yesterday decided to go alone in the May 16 Assembly polls, which could result in a six-cornered contest with the others being AIADMK front, DMK-Cong, BJP, four party bloc PWF and PMK.

Launched in September 2005, the DMDK contested the 2006 Assembly elections alone and secured over 8 per cent vote share.

This went up to 10.3 per cent in 2009 Parliamentary elections. In 2011, the party aligned with the AIADMK and won 29 seats, making it the main opposition in the Assembly. Earlier, Ms. Premalatha lashed out at both the AIADMK and the DMK, accusing them of encouraging corruption in administration.

“The DMDK was formed as an alternative to the AIADMK and the DMK. It is true we aligned with the AIADMK in 2011. But the moment our leader realised the government was initiating anti-government policies, he stormed out of the alliance. Our aim is to drive the two parties out of Tamil Nadu,” she added.

Ms. Premalatha also took on the media for publishing what she called “plants” the DMK had floated.

Actor-turned-politician A. Vijaykant on Wednesday announced that his DMDK will contest the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu in alliance with Vaiko's MDMK, the Left and Dalit party VCK.

The new alliance said Vijaykant, popularly known as "Captain" and who even the BJP was wooing, would be the chief ministerial candidate of the People's Welfare Front (PWF).

The announcement makes the PWF, which until now was made up of the MDMK, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India-Marxist and the VCK, a major force in the May electoral battle.

While the DMDK will put up candidates in 124 seats, the remaining 110 seats will be contested by the MDMK and the other three parties.
