The Sensex and the Nifty were trading higher by nearly 1.2 per cent owing to positive global cues.

Asian shares rallied on Thursday as speculation the US Federal Reserve might opt to not raise interest rates at all this year hammered the dollar and sparked a huge rally in oil prices.

At 12.55 p.m., the 30-share BSE index Sensex was up 265.03 points or 1.09 per cent at 24,488.35 and the 50-share NSE index Nifty was up 84.75 points or 1.15 per cent at 7,446.55.

Barring healthcare, all other BSE sectoral indices were trading in the green. Among them, capital goods index was up 2.96 per cent, followed by metal 2.37 per cent, consumer durables 2.32 per cent and IT 1.76 per cent. On the other hand, healthcare index was down 0.52 per cent.

Top five Sensex gainers were L&T (+3.44%), Adani Ports (+3.26%), ONGC (+3.14%), Asian Paints (+2.91%) and Infosys (+2.75%), while the major losers were Lupin (-2.58%), GAIL (-1.87%), NTPC (1.59%), Cipla (-1.56%) and Cipla (-0.04%).
