Direct-to-home television operator Tata Sky today launched a new application that allows watching live television programmes on mobile phones as the company looks to popularise its brand further. Tata Sky says the app, meant for both Android and iOS, will be coming soon, and will be released during the festive season.

Named 'Everywhere TV', the company said it will charge Rs. 60 per month from its existing customers, who can initially watch over 50 channels on their mobile phones.

"The idea is to let our subscribers watch TV while they are travelling or when they are out of home. All that they need is a good 3G mobile connection or a Wi-Fi connectivity," Tata Sky Chief Commercial Officer Vikram Mehra told PTI. He said the move is part of the company's plans to popularise the Tata Sky brand further in tune with the ever evolving customer demands.

"In the next three months, we will double the number of channels on offer on the 'Everywhere TV'," he said, adding the future plan was to get over 200 channels on it.

Initially, most of the Hindi and English channels will be available on Everywhere TV but later on regional channels will also be included, the company said.

On the potential customers, he said apart from the usual adult Tata Sky subscriber, the mobile TV will also attract attention from students who are in hostel as this would offer them a cheaper option to access live TV.

Tata Sky, the Indian direct-to-home (DTH) platform, is readying to launch a mobile catch-up and live television service called Everywhere TV.

The Everywhere TV service will be available this festive season on IOS and Android-based smartphones, offering live-streamed TV, a recording function and an on-demand choice from a video library of 2,000 titles.

An Ogilvy & Mather-developed advertising campaign has adopted the phrase: 'Koi nahin menega' ('No one will believe you') and introduces 'Tata Sky Mobile: Ab TV aap ki pocket main' ('Tata Sky Mobile: Now TV, in your pocket').

"Our research has shown that lifestyles are getting busier in today's day and age. Today over 60% of the (Tata Sky) population use Internet to view videos on their smartphones and tablets either at home or at the office. Everywhere TV is a unique service for all those valued subscribers who want to keep in touch with their favourite shows and channels that they have subscribed to on Tata Sky even when they are on move, through their mobile handsets," said Vikram Mehra, chief commercial officer, Tata Sky.

"The commercial communicates how television viewing amongst mature audiences has reached the next level, when one's mobile is referred to as 'TV' due to the Tata Sky Everywhere TV."

Seems to be huge money invested on Advertising of this new product to counter attack Dish TV recently launched app DishOnline.

So, HD users get ready to shell more money . Because I am sure this greedy fox will make us pay something like HD access fee here too :p

Sounds like a good feature but I don't think it'd really take off. With 3G being flaky and inconsistent, and of course expensive with not enough quota of data, i'll be left buffering for videos most of the while when travelling. And Wifi, you'll mostly get that at your home ( not like India has too many of those public wifi hotspots),so why not watch it on the big screen.
