This is what happenned to the assamese film industry in the previous decade, how it almost died:
Born as early as 1935, the industry was going very well until last decade of the 20th century. That was the time the state was dealing with a heavy dose of terror activities, mainly by the then powerful ULFA. At that time, to be honest, eveyone lived with fear. Midway into the decade, another panic was created, mainly by the media on the already fear striken people, that the cinema halls would be a major target for terror strikes like bomb blast etc. Fearing even more, people stopped going to watch movies altogether! At that time, except one or two odd films which did well only due to the stardom of Zubeen Garg and Jatin Bora, all other films were b.o. disasters. As a result of the heavy losses, a large share of halls had to be shut down, most producers went bankrupt, and the actors had already found alternate professions as tv serials and mobile theatre.
At the second part of the 2000s, though people had overcome the fear, lack of budget and lack of halls led to the release of movies that looked more like 10-20 years old movies! By 2010-11, slowly the quality improved, and some really good movies like "Ramdhenu" were released, and also got good response. However, the quantity of such movies were very less, and thus, 1 hit was mostly followed by about 10 flops.
In the meantime, Zubeen Garg, who was in the midst of his peak in bollywood as a playback singer, had left Mumbai and decided to help in the rebirth of the industry he started his career in. Films like "Rodor Sithi"(also starring Papon) and "Ekhon Nedekha Nodir Hipare, A the river flows" followed, where he worked as acted as well as composed music. The movies as well as the music were liked very much by the audience.
Come 2016, BJP govt comes to power, and they ease the tax on Assamese movies. Within 3-4 months, we are seeing a big growth in the quality and frequency of films. Movies like "Doordarshan ek jatra" and "Gaane ki Aane(another Zubeen Garg film)" did a a good business, and most recent "Pagli", though didn't do well, but considering that it clashed with ADHM, Shivaay and Dr strange, it did decently.
Thus, the upcoming "Bahnimaan" is tipped to be the final piece in the jigsaw for the industry. Now lets see what happens.....
