HD Access Fee is a mutual policy agreed by broadcasters and DTH operators and its away to let customers opt for the SD as well as HD version of their channels. This way broadcasters are earning for both the versions of their channels and DTH ops are able to keep prices of HD channels under check. If HD Access policy is removed then HD channel prices will zoom up. It all depends upon the TRAI case of pricing of HD channels, if its implemented then prices will come down and HD access policy may be scraped.

Well Honestly in Videocon d2h implementation of HD Access Fee hasn't made any major change, infact lower package people r getting more HD channels than they used to get before in HD packages but yes those who took lower package plus HD top up have suffered

It has highly impacted for people like me. I used to watch lowest pack with HD Globe as I do not watch any SD channel. Now I am out of this option.

I can enjoy it still as they are not forcefully changing the package to HD Access. But now I am stuck to this combination only as other option could be fatal and I may loose HD Globe addon.

So it seems its better for most viewers to have separate HD pack so that anyone who is interested in HD can go for HD pack..............instead of subscribing to higher packs & then paying HD access fees............

NEW DELHI: The New Year will ring in changes for the broadcast industry as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is planning to come out with a consultation paper on the pricing of high-definition (HD) channels. Presently, the authority is maintaining forbearance as far as HD channel pricing is concerned. However, the regulator is re-evaluating forbearance as it feels that the HD channels are not very different from the SD channels both in terms of quality and ads played on the former despite the fact that subscribers pay a premium to access these channels. “TRAI is mulling reviewing forbearance regime on HD channels. Consultation paper on the same will be floated next month,” PTI quotes a TRAI official source. “TRAI has not found much difference between SD and HD viewing experience. There is also little difference in the number of advertisements between the two,” the source added. Currently, there are about 40 HD channels in the country.
