Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) president and Star India CEO Uday Shankar is an angry man. He wants the broadcasting sector regulator to protect the interests of the stakeholders and not the five-star hotels. “It is inconceivable that any sector regulator would actually equate five-star hotels and commercial establishments with domestic consumers as far as tariffs are concerned. That’s exactly what the TRAI has done with rates for pay TV channels,” he says. Shankar was referring to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) tariff order that treats commercial subscribers on a par with ordinary subscribers and prevents broadcasters from providing signals directly to commercial subscribers.
