Television viewers in the UK are set to get personalised content, with Roku successfully launching its USB streaming stick which directly plugs into the TV set. The Roku USB stick will stream BBC iPlayer, YouTube and Netflix. Interestingly, the Roku streaming stick arrives in the UK ahead of rival Google’s launch of USB streamer Chromecast in the country. Roku streaming stick, once plugged into a TV, allows the consumer to stream up to 1080p HD video from over 750 movie channels, TV series, music, news, sports, kids’ shows and free programming. Recently launched channels include 4OD, YouTube and Condé Nast Entertainment, covering their Oscars afterparty and New Yorker conferences. The Roku app, which is also available for download to smartphones or tablets, enables users to control what they watch via the bundled WiFi remote control. Consumers can add other personal media of their choice apart from Netflix, BBC iPlayer and YouTube. It is expected that in future the Roku streaming stick will enable consumers to stream content from their own computer to the TV. Priced £49.99, the USB stick will be on sale from late April. Roku director of product management Lloyd Clarke said that over 1.7 billion hours of entertainment was streamed via Roku last year, a 70 per cent rise year on year. The little Roku streaming box makes it easy to enjoy the hottest movies, TV shows, music, games and more on the user’s TV by streaming them directly from the internet. Millions of people use Roku every day to access their favourite entertainment instantly and on demand.
