Thalaivaa’s official release date is the 9th of August. The unit is definitely targeting the Eid weekend as the holy festival begins on the 7th of August.
The film is likely to stand unopposed locally with no other film’s release confirmed during the same weekend but the International market will prove to be a different proposition altogether. The promotions for Bollywood Baadshah Shahrukh Khan’s Chennai Express have been swelling up day by day as the film is being presented as an Eid treat all over. The overseas market too will be flooded with the SRK film and therefore Thalaivaa could be facing seriously stiff competition in that regard.
The festival of Eid is supposed to bring a lot of luck to the film industry as films that have released on the day have gone on to become blockbusters like Ajith’s Mankatha or Salman Khan’s Bodyguard in 2011 or Ek Tha Tiger in 2012. Either way, for Tamil cinema fans the release of Thalaivaa will add more color and joy during a week that will already be brimming with festive spirit all the way till the Independence Day
