Players from bottom half of the draw took the court on Day 2 of the Wimbledon Championships. The likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, defending champion Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki played their first round matches.

Let us look at all the results from today.

World No. 2 Roger Federer started his bid for a record eighth Wimbledon title with a 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 win over Damir Dzumhur. He was aggressive with his ground strokes and won 85 % points on his first serve. The No. 2 seed broke Dzumhur’s serve on five occasions and did not face a single break point on his serve throughout the match.

He will face American Sam Querrey in the next match. Querrey beat Igor Sijsling 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

Rafael Nadal was clinical in his straight sets win over Thomaz Bellucci

2-time champion Rafael Nadal was in imperious form as he dispatched Thomaz Bellucci 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in 2 hours and 11 minutes. The Spaniard hit 21 winners against 23 unforced errors, but hit some splendid winners on both sides of the court to unsettle the Brazilian. This is Bellucci’s fifth straight loss to Nadal in straight sets.

Nadal will take on German Dustin Brown in the second round on Thursday. Brown had beaten Nadal in Halle last year.

Andy Murray came through in straight sets against Mikhail Kukushkin

Andy Murray, one of the favorites for the tournament was tested by unseeded Mikhail Kukushkin in his opening round encounter on center court. The Scot came through 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-4 in 2 hours and 12 minutes.

Kukushkin went toe to toe with Murray on baseline rallies, but the No. 3 seed won crucial moments to seal the match in straight sets.

No. 12 seed Gilles Simon beat Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 on court 2. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga dud deep to beat Gilles Muller 7-6 (8), 6-7 (3), 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. His compatriot Gael Monfils was in complete control during his 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 win over Pablo Carreno Busta.

Petra Kvitova wasted little time in dispatching Kiki Bertens

Defending champion Petra Kvitova crushed Kiki Bertens 6-1, 6-0 in just 35 minutes on center court. No. 13 seed Agnieszka Radwanska overcame Lucie Hradecka 6-3, 6-2 in 68 minutes. No. 10 seed Angelique Kerber beat Carina Witthoeft 6-0, 6-0 in just 44 minutes.

No. 5 seed Caroline Wozniacki looked in trouble in the first set against Saisai Zheng, but came through 7-5, 6-0 by winning the last 13 games.

Eugenie Bouchard lost in the first round of a Grand Slam yet again

Major talking point in the women’s draw was the ouster of Eugenie Bouchard and Simona Halep in the first round. Bouchard lost 6-7 (3), 4-6 to China’s Ying-Ying Duan. The Canadian also lost in the first round at Roland Garros this year. Bouchard is in danger of dropping outside the Top 20 as she failed to defend her final points this season.

Japan's fifth seed Kei Nishikori pulled out of Wimbledon after a calf injury prevented him from playing his second round clash. Nishikori was scheduled to face Colombia's Santiago Giraldo for a place in the last 32. The 25-year-old first suffered the injury in Halle last month when he was forced to retire in the semi-finals. He had needed five sets to beat Simone Bolelli in the first round at Wimbledon on Monday and felt the injury again. "It got worse in the fifth set of that match, it hurt so much," said Nishikori. "It hurt to walk and run today so I decided not to play."
