Delhi air pollution at over 6 times safe limit after Diwali

Air pollution across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday morning, a day after Diwali, was categorized as “severe”, with nearly six times the average levels of deadly PM 2.5 (particulate matter up to 2.5 microns in size), which lodges itself in the lungs and increases risks of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and even lung cancers.

Pollution levels on Diwali day this year were higher than last year, a governmentreport said. The report predicted “very poor to poor” air quality in the city on Friday.

“As predicted, Diwali 2015 period came out to be more polluted than last year. Overall, Delhi pollution index was transformed from very poor category to severe category since evening of 11 November and reached its peak around 2am on 12 November” said Gufran Beig, chief project scientist at the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) of the Union ministry of earth sciences. “Analysis indicates that although air quality deteriorated, the magnitude was relatively less by 18-20% than expected which may be attributed to source means reduction by same magnitude in the emissions from firecrackers, which is a satisfactory sign.”

Diwali not so noisy this year in Hyderabad

Colourful display of fireworks, strikingly bright traditional attires and an air thick with aromas of mouthwatering delicacies marked the city's Diwali celebrations this year. And while there was no toning down of the celebratory mood, the festival of lights seemed less 'deafening' and evidently 'safer' than last year, if the number of mishaps reported in city hospitals is anything to go by.

But while the relentless calls for a 'green', crackerfree Diwali found resonance in the IT belt that remained less noisy with many 'environment-conscious' techies either giving firecrackers a complete miss this year, it wasn't true of some other areas of the city. Residents of these areas, on the contrary, rued how the booming sounds from firecrackers continued to 'haunt' them well into the wee hours of the night.

"Starting daybreak, the deafening crackers kept going off every other minute and I was even afraid to step out as the roads were taken over by people celebrating Diwali. They had no concern for the vehicles or the pedestrians and sometimes even set off fi recrackers without warning bystanders to be careful," said Krishna Reddy, a resident of Banjara Hills, who decided to stay indoors to avoid the Diwali 'madness'.

That wasn't clearly true of many others, as many city malls reported an increase in footfall this Diwali. Inorbit mall recorded over 50,000 people strolling into its decked up interiors on Wednesday to participate in the Diwali mela and sign up for shop-and-win contests.
