What i am sharing is my personal experience. So, in no way 720p is better than 1080i.
Your personal experience seems to be with 720p converted from 1080i by your stb (which is not the best conversion medium anyways) as you already said. Better start making a few personal experiences with real 720p...

And yes it makes a huge difference not only in sports, but also in movies with special effects....

Technically speaking, in 1080i though scan lines are higher, only half of the pixels are used at a time, to give an optical illusion that resolution is higher. In most cases it looks almost like 720p, or even better in rare cases where pictures have hardly any movement... But then, none of these picture splitting algorithms(Adams are mostly used) are perfect, and they start making mistakes, resulting in a few broken images. Yes, some people may not notice, but most do, especially videophiles like me...

And lastly, I'm not quoting any random blog, if that was the cse, I won't be so passionate about it.

Since I'm having a specialization in compute graphics in masters, I feel its my duty to correct people with misconceptions regarding the subject... I feel I've tried hard enough to explain, but if you're still in denial, I can't help it. Maybe if we personally meet someday, I'll be able to explain and demonstrate you with the most minute details.....

:wink2:

I am aware of it. this detail is easily available on internet. For that i don't think i need specialization in computer graphics. I also said the same thing above.

That's where you guys and me have difference. I am not looking it at from an expert eye. I am looking from a layman eye and may be that's the reason i am feeling that 1080i looks better than 720p.

Seriously? By this logic 2 > 4 will be there in your mathematics book.

You're following 1st grade mathematics logic, I understand. Let me break this to a 1st grader in that case. In 1080i, only half pixels refresh at once. So when you view a cartoon show in 1080i, only 30 frames are being sent per second; while in 720p, 60 frames are being sent per second.

Just because 1080 is a bigger number, doesn't make 1080i better than 720p, because there are 2 variables attached to these 2 numbers - p and i. And to make things simple, 2i ≈ p. What does that tell us? 540p < 720p.

Use brains wherever necessary.

Hmmm did you personally created any contents on 720 p or 1080 i or processed it ?

You have no idea. Do you really think MTV Beats HD broadcasts the whole frame in 16:9 ratio? It's croppped.
Watch Anger Management movie right now on Comedy Central HD and you will know the difference between full picture and cropped picture.

With this logic any broadcasting in the Country shouldn't be in Full Screen right ? Specially HD or 4K Sports broadcasting.

Bhai you watch TV for technology or entertainment . Theoretically also 1080i isn't half of 1080p

When I can't feel the difference with my naked eyes how does it matter.

Where as I can see a noticeable difference between 720p and 1080i. Isn't this enough instead of going for so big gyans ;)
I am watching for entertainment I too did not find any difference s hope soon we will get to know the differences

A layman eye is enough to see that 720p is better.
By your words, I think there are 2 possibilities why you are not able to get it right:
1. Maybe you are too obsessed with the numbers 1080 and 720, thats why even if your eye sees better picture in 720p, your mind refuses to believe it. Thus, you think 1080i is better than 720p.
2. More likely one is that maybe you are only comparing by 'changing modes' in your stb, thus comparing 1080i with converted 720p.

Remedy: take two copies of the same video, one in 1080i(not converted from 720p, converted from 1080p will do) and other in 720p(not converted from i), then view them one after another without knowing which one is which. Now compare both(don't look at the label where res is written) without knowing which is 720p and which is 1080i. After giving your verdict, then see which one you have selected. That way your confusion will be over.

I don't know what problem you're having, but what you're saying is really really wierd...
BTW can I know your video device name?
