My LCD plays mkv files too. i checked some files not worked (like .mts and only some .mkv or .mp4) which i renamed its extension and then worked perfectly....on general parameters, i think samsung plays more formats than others brands. i may be wrong, please correct.
As far as i know Samsung and Panasonic TVs are having all format playing capacity.

I had played 1080p videos on my previous Samsung LCD ready model.

Plasma is all different technology it produces it's own lit by burning phosphorus. LED tv is having LCD panel with LED backlit and LCD tv is having LCD panel having CCFL backlit.
I have checked my uncle's Plasma. It does not play .vob/.vro files (video from panasonic camcorder)...But it works in usb of samsung lcd...:)
It may be old model but i know from 2012 series it plays all formats...LCD/LED plays all formats....Plasma of 2013 plays all format not in sure older plasmas

benefit of LED over LCD is
1) have more lifetime
2) creates more bright white backlight so images are brighter, crispier and having more angel view
3) consumes less Electricity.

Yes...in format concern the company SONY was far behind till now than others..they incurred losses also...now they are giving all format playing capacity from current 2013 models only. till 2012 their tvs were dumb in formats.
in 2013 only .flv can't be played.

i have

not checked CRT tv. But i compared LCD/LED/Plasma. Plasma consumes more than LCD. LCD consumes slightly more than LED-backlit LCD.

I do agree that electricity consumption of Plasma is high when its compared to LCD or LED.....but electricity consumption is not factor for my purchase...but if i want to purchase a 32" TV now i would definetly go for LED....

Definitely go for LED..LEDs are attractively thin with super narrow bezels, Produces more angel view and bright colour.
