CPL to introduce major changes in playing conditions | Cricbuzz.com

Severe penalty for slow over rates and a coin toss to decide who bats first in the Super Over are the two amendments that would come into effect in terms of playing conditions during this year's CPL.

Since the tournament's inception in 2013, CPL has been dogged by slow over rates. As a result, in case of a particular team failing to bowl their overs within the stipulated time period, the administrators have decided to employ the net run rate penalty, which in turn could affect the side's chances to qualify for the playoffs.

If a side falls short by one over, 0.05 would be subtracted from their net run rate. For each additional over a team falls short of finishing their quota, it would result in a penalty of .10 in terms of NRR. As of now, a side has to finish their quota of 20 overs within 85 minutes. However, umpires have the jurisdiction to allot additional time depending on delays in play.

The other change in playing conditions is related to coin toss for Super Over. In the past, the side that batted second in a tied game was given the chance to take first strike in the Super Over.

"We work hard each year to ensure that playing conditions are making the competition as fair as possible while also keeping the spectators and viewers at home entertained. We feel both of these changes will help with both of these goals," Michael Hall, the tournament operations director for CPL, said.
