Diwali in Ranchi less noisy but pollution still up

The noise pollution level crossed the permissible decibel count in most places of Ranchi on Diwali though it was less compared to last year, Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board officials said on Thursday.

The pollution board had installed machines to calculate sound levels at six places in the state capital from 6pm to midnight on Wednesday and the noise pollution was found to be higher than the permissible level in all the areas, officials said. The maximum noise pollution was recorded from 6pm to 9pm.

The machines were installed at Albert Ekka Chowk, MECON, high court, Sujata Chowk, Van Bhawan and Raj Bhawan.

The permissible decibel count in silence zones is 40 dB during nights and 50 dB during days. For commercial areas the permissible count is 65 dB during days and 55 dB during nights and for residential areas, it’s 55 dB and 45 dB.

The average noise calculated by the machines in the city was 72.5 dB this year, down from last year’s 82.83 dB, said JSPCB member secretary Sanjay Kumar Suman.

Sale of noisy crackers dips in Mumbai as aware citizens pitch for eco-friendly Diwali

The city seems to have woken up to the noise and air pollution caused by crackers, as activists saw Mumbaikars observing a Diwali which could be one of the quietest in a decade. Environmentalist and convener of Awaaz Foundation, Sumaira Abdulali, who started recording noise levels from Bandra to Marine Drive since 7.30pm on Wednesday, said there were noticeably fewer crackers across the city.
"I started from Bandra and moved towards Vile Parle and Juhu. There were hardly any places where we could see a lot of crackers and take a reading. There was a little noise around Mithibai College, Vile Parle," said Abdulali. The highest decibel level of 123.1dB was recorded at Marine Drive, higher than last year's 105. "This was because I was standing right next to where the bomb went off. But quantity needs to be considered and that is very low this time. Usually, the sky in Marine Drive is full of firecrackers and there are many people but that isn't the case this time. So I am very positive that we are having a quiet Diwali," she said. The highest decibel recorded at Mithibai College was 100dB and 102dB at Worli seaface.

At Marine Drive, there was no adherence to the 10pm deadline for bursting crackers. People were seen bursting crackers till late. However, by 11pm, cops came in large numbers and put an end to the revelry.

Not industry of cracker but other industries which are situated in cities.

No doubt Cracker industry is not a flourishing industry just 4 days of business for small sellers.

You are underestimating bro. Festivals keep happening in India and crackers are always in demand.

It must be no less than 3000 crore.
