French engineering company Alstom has won a contract worth around 200 billion rupees ($3 billion) to supply India’s railways with 800 electric locomotives and set up a local manufacturing plant, a railways spokesman said on Tuesday.

The contract is one of the largest awarded to a foreign firm since India last year opened up limited parts of its state-owned railways to 100 percent foreign direct investment, and comes as the government tries to modernise its vast but outdated rail network.

US company General Electric said on Monday it had won a deal worth $2.6 billion to supply India with diesel locomotives over the next 11 years. ($1 = 66.3600 Indian rupees)

Hoping we get high powered diesel engines and coaches with international standards.

Have a doubt, Railways are looking for electrification of lines across india and now we have contracts awarded for diesel engines? Some thing fishy

Nope. Electrification is for all lines and phasing out diesel engines was the plan since the oil prices went up. Now I guess they have changed the plans.

Alstom will supply electric locos. GE is supplying diesels.

Both these would be primarily for the dedicated freight corridor. There are plans of running regular and python double stacked container rakes with 1+1+1 or 2+1+1 loco arrangement for pythons.

Double Stacked containers have containers one above the other. These can run in special sections with good clearance. Most lines are non-electrified.

Python rake is a double length rake. Basically two goods trains attached together. Used mostly for non mineral freight. The two rakes are joined by a loco. They can have two locos in the front and either two or one loco at the rear as bankers.

Alstom locos which would be adapted in India

Normally used in twin configuration, with connected vestibule for crew movement. These would be high torque 6000HP locos. The bogies for the locos would be Bo-Bo (4 axles). However, the locos supplied to India might undergo some change and can end up as Co-Co (6 axles) and be designed for dual cab single loco operation too.
