Drinking Rail Neer, the bottled water offering from Indian Railways, could give you an upset stomach and other gastrointestinal diseases. Worse still, Rail Neer is now the only packaged drinking water available at train stations after the CBI's raids last month in New Delhi.
Samples of Rail Neer picked up from Bharuch railway station in Gujarat have failed the tests conducted by the Baroda Food and Drug Authority. Water from the samples was found to be high in aerobic microbial count -- 39 cfu/ml (colony forming units/millilitre) as against the maximum permissible value of 20 cfu/ml.
The sample that was tested at Baroda FDA was collected from a tea stall at Bharuch station. The staion, part of the Vadodara division of Western Railways, is an important halting station for trains bound for Ahmedabad junction, Jaipur junction, Mumbai, Amritsar and Delhi.
The sample was collected by the food and safety officer of Vadodara division, RC Kutar, on August 23 and the test reports were released on September 14. Mirror has a copy of the test reports.
