News MSM’s Sony Kix beefs up football content with La Liga acquisition

After grabbing the rights to Serie A and FA, Multi Screen Media’s (MSM) football dedicated channel Sony Kix has scored a hat-trick by acquiring the telecast rights to La Liga, the premier division of the Spanish football league system, for three years till 2018. The broadcaster will exclusively telecast the league across India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Maldives through the three-year deal. Incidentally, Star India was the incumbent broadcaster for all the three events. The broadcaster had recently acquired rights to Bundesliga till 2020.

The former is telecasting the World Cup and has the rights to India cricket internationally, while the latter is gearing up to telecast the cricket league – the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the next two months, apart from Euro 2016 qualifiers, FIFA International friendlies and various Fight sports. At stake is close to Rs 4,500 crore that is likely to be spent by advertisers on sports television this year. Of this ginormous pie, approximately Rs 2000-2,200 crore is estimated to be spent on the World Cup and IPL. It’s no wonder then that the two are resorting to sledging within the confines of advertisers’ and media agencies’ cabins and to journos.

It was highly rumoured that Star will grab IPL in 2015 and Sony gonna take T20 World Cup as mutually decided by both companies but the deal didn't went through and fights have started.
