In fact my data cable (cum charging cable) seems to have some issues. It fails to connect to pc most of the times.Even it's too slow in charging the phone.I am using my old Nokia cable these days which charges my phone very quickly.I am going to check how it works when connecting to pc.

Exactly that's the problem, they say it's a common issue with S3 data cable. It's slow to charge because it's connected as USB and not AC when connected to wall charger. You can check in battery menu whether it's charging as USB or AC

And no point in changing it as the new one you get will become faulty soon.

For safe side take the backup although it's not required.

I have rooted 3-4 phones without backup and nothing was lost.

More ever I don't think you can take full back without rooting your phone. You can only take back of your images, videos songs etc. You can use Samsung kite for back up. But once you root it I feel back up is must. You never know when you need it just have one backed up ready in case.
