Pink Samsung Galaxy S III unveiled, landing in Korea first

Samsung has been quite busy expanding the palette of available colors for its Galaxy S III flagship. Only three weeks ago it announced four new versions of the quad-core smartphone will be making their ways to the shelves and now we learn of a new fifth one.
The Samsung Galaxy S III will be hitting Korean shelves in pink next week. This brings the total number of choices for the color of the smartphone to seven, after the initially available Marble White and Pebble Blue and the four new versions from the end of last month (Amber Brown, Garnet Red, Sapphire Black and Titanium Grey).

Naturally, availability of the individual colors will vary by region, and we haven't received confirmation yet that the Pink units will be leaving Korea at all, but chances are you'll be able to get whatever color you prefer all around the globe in time for Christmas.

Samsung Speedily Plugs Remote Wipe Flaw, Urges Galaxy SIII Owners To Update

The select Samsung handsets running its TouchWiz UI were affected by a flaw that could allow them to be remote wiped after clicking on a malicious link. Samsung has now confirmed it has patched the flaw for its flagship Galaxy SIII handset.
Samsung is urging Galaxy SIII owners to update to the latest version of its software to ensure they are protected against the flaw. Here’s Samsung’s official statement:
We would like to assure our customers that the recent security issue concerning the GALAXY S III has already been resolved through a software update. We recommend all GALAXY S III customers to download the latest software update, which can be done quickly and easily via the Over-The-Air (OTA) service.
Handsets vulnerable to the exploit also included the Galaxy S II series, the Galaxy S Advance, Galaxy Beam, and Galaxy Ace.
We’re asking Samsung to confirm whether it has released patches for all affected handsets.
The problem apparently lies with how Samsung’s TouchWiz dialer handles USSD codes, and also how the stock browser handles the “tel:” protocol handler. As well as dodgy links, it can also be triggered by scanning a malicious QR code.

The vulnerability came to light at a recent security conference in Argentina, demoed by Technical University Berlin researcher Ravi Borgaonkar.
  • Phones support special dialing codes called USSDs that can display certain information or perform specific special features. Among these are common ones (*#06# to display IMEI number) and phone specific ones (including, on some phones, a factory reset code).
  • There is a URL scheme prefix called tel: which can, in theory, be used to hyperlink to phone numbers. The idea being that clicking on a tel: URL will initiate the phone's dialer to call that number.
  • In some phones the dialer will automatically process the incoming number. If it's a USSD code then it will be handled exactly as if it had be keyed in manually - requiring no user intervention to execute.
  • A tel: URL can be used by a hostile website as the SRC for an iframe (or potentially other resources like stylesheets or scripts I guess). It may then be loaded and acted upon with no user intervention at all.
