Progressive scans the whole image before transmitting whereas interlace scans odd or even horizontal lines. @dmajor you need to learn or get knowledge about AR. With or without black bars the ratio is 16:9 subject to camera's lens used.

There was no HD resolution in terminology in old days but still many of such movies upgraded to HD resolution. Does those days HD camera being used to shoot those ? Lots of classic Clint Eastwood movies has shoot with CinemaScope with purposely black bar on it Sony Pix even broadcasted with black bar once they had rights but now that movie has upgraded with HD resolution and MN+ broadcasting in HD resolution with full screen.

My only intention to say that whatever is in black bar doesn't mean that it shooted like this but processed like that.

Even if it is remastered AR doesn't change in the first place. I hope you know the basics.
What Indian channels are doing is butchering the viewing experience.

Black bars are due do aspect ratio differences between original video and screen. It's accomated to get the whole video on screen.
But you can crop any video to make 16:9 for your TV full screen viewing.
