Thats what I am saying. To remove black bars, instead of cropping the picture to 16:9, why dont they 'stretch' the picture to 16:9. That way, there won't be any black bars, and no content would be lost....
This is how MTV Beats are broadcasting without loosing any content everything in 16:9 this tactic will surely adopt by all Hindi channels soon.

You have no idea. Do you really think MTV Beats HD broadcasts the whole frame in 16:9 ratio? It's croppped.
Watch Anger Management movie right now on Comedy Central HD and you will know the difference between full picture and cropped picture.

Bro, how can they stetch picture to 16:9? The picture is bigger than 16:9 aspect ratio. So they just crop the picture to fit your full screen. Hence you don't get black bars.
To get original pictures, pictures are adjusted for your screen, hence they are rather condensed to fit your screen for whole picture. So you get black bars above and below the pictures.

If they stretch the picture upward and downward after fitting for your screen, the images will look a lot worse. Like someone has stretched their face and everything upward and downward.

Are you joking dude ? Don't you have option in your TV to change mode ?
Yes, thats it! Game over! That was exactly why I was asking the question, because I knew you were doing that method to compare!

Now let me explain it to you:

When you are viewing 720p by 'changing modes', you are not viewing 720p, you are watching the result of conversion from 1080i to 720p, as no Indian channel broadcasts 720p!

Now, without going into technical details, let me tell you, interlaced(i) and progressive(p) are two formats coded very differently, and converting from one to the other leads to massive loss of quality and detail due to incompatibility.

Since the source video is 1080i, 'changing modes' converts it to 720p, and the result is a diminished quality as stated above, giving you the wrong impression that 1080i is better than 720p. That was what I have been trying to explain you, and thats why I was stressing the question, as I knew where your misconception is...

Now, I request you to play a real 720p video on your tv, (one converted from 1080p will do), and compare it with 1080i. I assure you, all your doubts and misconceptions will be cleared..

And sorry if I was rude.....

Yes, a bit like our 4:3 sd channels, which are stretched massively, leftward and rightward...

Yes. You can experience it on your PC. Just try to select 16:9 ratio for movies which have black bars by default on VLC.

That was actually the basis on which I asked my first question. Yes it looks bad, but since our channels are obsessed with covering the whole screen, I say its better to do this than cutting the sides....

I can't agree with you on this because there is no other way you gonna compare this. Even if i watch a 720p video on my LED its not better than 1080i of DTH telecast.

You can't say that technically 720p is better but nowhere its proved, its just that someone wrote a blog or article and everyone is considering it.

What i am sharing is my personal experience. So, in no way 720p is better than 1080i.

Now where will 720p and 1080i make difference. When you are watching soccer of any such high motion game. There non refreshing of half pixels matter.

Otherwise since resolution and pixels of 1080i is higher so technically its anytime better than 720p.
