Do they charge for Service?

I just called the customer care for some signal issues I'm facing for last couple of days. They are telling the service technician will charge Rs.150/- just for visiting the place and checking the issue.

Is it a known thing that they charge for service? Isn't it supposed to be free?

Yes bro...they charge 150 rs for engineer visit to your home and if some parts replaced then you also have to pay for that extra...
Free service is valid only for 1 year of new subscription.

Yes not sure but almost every dth charges for service visits.
I think TS gives free service if ppl do Mega HD recharge for 1 year...not so sure, but IndianMascot bro can help because he uses TS.

Even d2h have free service visit if you subscribe to their VPC scheme which cost some 500 per year.

In Tata sky if you make annual recharge of Mega HD, service visit and relocation is free.

Ya d2h's VPC is there but it is not worth it...650 rs. For a year!!
If we call engineer 4 times then also it would be costly, except some part of hardware is replaced then it would b worth it but it doesn't happen every time.
I think they should decrease cost to atleast rs 400 then some customers might get attracted to it but 651 is too much

Dishtv charges for such kind of visits but it will be free if you opt for Service contract I am not able to remember the exact name but they charges Rs. 299 for SD and Rs. 399 for HD users yearly if you opted for such scheme service visit will be free for 1 year.

Pack name is "Service Care Pack" which includes Free Service Visit for 1 Year + Replacement of STB, VC and LNB if needed.
